[ dust cover blurb transl. sinntagma.com: ] Francis Godwin’s The Man in the Moone, published posthumously in 1638, stands out as the first science fiction novel written in English. It takes the form of autobiographical travelogue, introducing the fictitious Spaniard Domingo Gonsales as a narrator figure. A first abridged translation into German based on an earlier rendering into French was published in 1659. Godwin’s space voyage combines contemporary discussions of cosmology and astronomy, mechanics and magnetism, with an account of the narrator’s adventurous experiences on his flight to the moon – which he accomplishes by means of an apparatus drawn by wild geese – and during his encounters with the Lunarians. In that, Gonsales’ account of his travels not only sets out to prove the inhabitation of extraterrestrial venues, but also to substantiate the credibility of the Copernican worldview through fictional eyewitness testimony.
The second volume in the series Weltraumreisen, this edition presents the first unabridged German translation of Godwin’s novel, accompanied by extensive annotations and an afterword that provide historical context and acquaint readers with the author’s life and oeuvre.
